MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS > STRINGS > RUBBER BAND BOX GUITAR

Rubber band box guitars are one of the simplest instruments that Bash the Trash makes, and yet, if created with the right materials and played the right way it can make truly beautiful sounds!

For an string instrument with a little more control, try the Tube Guitar.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT BUILDING - THE PROCEDURE!

YOU WILL NEED

  • A box, either cardboard (corrugated works best) or styrofoam

  • Rubber bands - in general, thicker rubber bands will create more sound, but needs a sturdy box

1.

Stretch your rubber bands over the box (make sure the top is off!).

2.

Pluck the rubber bands with your fingers.  Adjust the tuning by pulling the rubber bands tighter or looser.

3.

You can put a neck on your instrument to make it look more like a guitar.  Get a cardboard tube and trace the circle of the tube on the end of your box.  ASK AN ADULT to help you cut a hole slightly smaller than the traced circle.  Slide the tube into the hole.  If it doesn’t fit you can cut the hole a bit bigger, or tape it up a bit.  Never mind that the strings don’t go up the neck - it’s just there to look cool....
