Percussion instruments can be shaken, scraped or struck.  While there are a zillion different percussion instruments, there are two main kinds - membranophones (in which a vibrating head makes the sound), and idiophones (where the whole instrument vibrates to make sound).  Drums are membranophones.  Everything else is an idiophone, pretty much....

The musical family that produces sound by the vibration of stretched strings.

Percussion instruments can be shaken, scraped or struck. 

Wind instruments produce sound by a vibrating column of air.
